Swing with a Recycled Tire

Charlotte J. Devine · ·

A classic of recycling! If you have a used tire on hand and a good garden, you can make a DIY swing like this. Decorate it with spray paint and give it your touch;)

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

 Tools

  •  Brush
  •  Flexometer
  •  Permanent marker
  •  Drill
  •  Scissors

 materials

  •  Washers
  •  Rope
  •  Spray primer for plastics
  •  Tire
  •  Spray paint
  •  Template
  •  Nuts

STEP BY STEP

1. Apply primer

Start by preparing the tire that will become your swing . Clean the surface well with a brush to remove dust or other dirt and leave it ready to apply a spray plastic primer. Shake the bottle well – it is essential to do it when you apply spray -, give it several layers and let it dry. This primer will make the paint to decorate the tire grip better.

2. Paint the tire

When the primer is dry, it is time to decorate the tire with a base color. Apply several coats of spray paint, leaving a few minutes in between, and let it dry. To make it more special, you can decorate the future swing with a motive – we have given it a summery touch by decorating with fruits – with more spray paint and the help of a stencil.

3. Place the sockets

When the paint is dry, it is time to fix the anchors that will allow you to hang the swing using ropes. Mark four opposite points, two and two, and make holes with the drill and a suitable bit. When you have them, install the sockets with the help of nuts and washers.

Make sure to install the proper anchors for the use you want to put the swing.

4. Attach the strings

Lastly, attach the ropes to hang the swing. Cut four pieces of rope to the length you want and secure them tightly to each of the four shells with a sailor’s knot. Ready!

This is how our summer swing was, what do you think? Do you like the fruit motifs with which we have decorated it? Leave us a comment and tell us 😉

Legged Planter Made from a Tire

Charlotte J. Devine · ·

Do you like to give things a second use? And the plants? Then watch this tutorial: transform a used tire into a planter with wooden legs and decorated with spray paint.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

 Tools

  •  Brush
  •  Flexometer
  •  Manual stapler
  •  Pencil
  •  Torque wrench
  •  Shovel
  •  Watering can
  •  Marker pen
  •  Keyhole saw
  •  Drill
  •  Scissors

 Materials

  •  Washers
  •  Spray primer for plastics
  •  Square slat
  •  Tire
  •  Spray paint
  •  Plants
  •  Substratum
  •  Wooden board
  •  Geotextile fabric
  •  Metric screws
  •  Wood screws
  •  Nuts

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Paint the tire

The first step in creating your planter with legs is to paint the recycled tire. Use a brush to remove any dirt from its surface and apply a coat of spray primer. Let dry and paint with the color you want. Give it several layers, leaving a few minutes between them.

2. Cut the pieces of wood

Once the surface of the tire is dry, make the legs of the planter from a square strip of wood. Use a thick one, capable of supporting the weight of the tire and the pot. Cut four equal parts, with the ends cut at 15º: this way the legs will be inclined towards the outside, something that will make the structure more resistant. Use a jigsaw capable of cutting at an angle to cut the wood.

Also cut a circular wooden base for the planter, to which the legs will be screwed. To do it, measure the diameter of the tire – taking the measurement from the middle of the rubber – and transfer that measurement to a wooden board.

3. Attach the legs to the wooden base

Use wood screws to screw the legs to the wooden base, a few inches from the edge. If the wooden circumference were a clock, place the legs at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock.

4. Attach the wooden base to the tire

Drill four equidistant holes in the wooden base to attach it to the tire. Mark those same holes in the tire and repeat the process, creating another four holes. Join the tire and the wooden base with metric screws, tightening them with a spanner. Structure ready!

5. Lay the geotextile fabric

It is time to prepare the structure to be able to plant the plant. Cut a piece of geotextile fabric and staple it to the inside of the tire. Cut a piece large enough to fit the plant and substrate: when you grapes, it should look like a bag inside the tire.

6. Transplant the plant

Finally, it remains to place the plant in your new pot. Pour the substrate with the help of a shovel and plant whatever you want 😉 Done!

What do you think of the result? Does this convince you to recycle tires? Leave us your comments!

Seat from a Tire

Charlotte J. Devine · ·

Tires are a gold mine! You can make swings, shelves, tables … and a seat as cool as this. Recycle a wheel and create a DIY bean bag with string and some pretty paint. Look at the guide and tell us what you think in the comments 😉

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

 Tools

  •  Brush
  •  Masking tape
  •  Flexometer
  •  White marker
  •  Drill
  •  Scissors

 materials

  •  Rope
  •  Spray primer
  •  Tire
  •  Spray paint

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Make the holes

To start your seat with a tire, mark equidistant dots along the entire surface of the tire with a white marker. From these marks, make holes in the rubber with the help of a drill and a thick bit.

2. Paint the tire

Holes made? Then take a brush. Clean the entire surface of the tire well, removing any dust or rubber that may have come off after making the holes. You need to do this carefully so that when spray painting, the result is good. Once the tire is clean, apply a coat of spray primer, let it dry and paint with the color of your choice.

3. Braid the rope

When the tire surface is dry, begin creating the rope seat. Thread one of the ends of the rope with a bit of tape – the bodybuilder’s tape will do – and pass it through one of the holes. Secure with a knot underneath and pass the rope through the opposite end: so on until one side is completed, covering the hole in the tire. Once you are done, change the direction of the rope, which will be perpendicular to the other, and cover the rest of the tire. Pass the rope under and over, alternately, the ropes that you have already laid, creating the rope net that will serve as a seat. Finish with a knot.

Ready! Do you like how it turned out? Would you put it at home? It seems like a very cool idea to us and… sustainable!

Shabby Coffee Table Made from Pallets

Charlotte J. Devine · ·

Furniture made from pallets is a great DIY project. In addition, there is the charm of the imperfect surface in the shabby chic look. All of this can be done with paint, sandpaper and pallets so that it almost looks like the new coffee table has been behind it for many years.

Shabby chic doesn’t always have to be in pastel shades: with colors in brown, red or blue tones, such a piece of furniture goes particularly well with an industrial-style interior.

This is how the shabby chic look is created:

An individual coffee table can be created in just a few steps from two whole pallets, three colors and four castors. Euro pallets can be bought in hardware stores, but used pallets are also available from some dealers. They can look used, but they shouldn’t be broken! So that nothing wobbles or falls through on the table, the gaps between the individual boards are closed with strips.

Synthetic resin colored lacquer was used for the surface design. This viscous lacquer is opaque with normal use – if you only apply a little lacquer, the structure of the wood shines through. This creates opaque and more transparent areas, which has the effect of a chipped shabby paintwork. The alternative that is often shown: Sand down the opaque paint in places. The more paint jobs you do, the more time the project will take. With three colors you have to assume about two days. In this way, the coatings can dry properly overnight from the first day and final assembly can take place on the second day. Of course, the areas that will not be visible do not need to be painted.

Material and tool list:

  • Two Euro pallets (size approx. 120 x 80 cm)
  • Wooden strips
  • Four furniture castors, possibly two with brakes
  • (Synthetic resin) colored varnish and brush
  • Sandpaper and sanding block
  • Screws
  • Flat connector
  • Cordless screwdriver
  • Possibly. Grinding machine

Sanding pallets

Regardless of whether they are old or new: Euro pallets are mostly made of rough sawn material and have many protruding wood splinters. They have to go so that nobody gets hurt. In addition, sanded wood absorbs paint better. A sanding machine (here, for example, a multi-sander from Bosch) is particularly careful; narrow areas are best worked on manually with sandpaper. Then remove the wood dust from the pallets.

Tip: grinding makes a lot of dirt! This is a job that you do outside or in the workshop or garage if possible.

Surface painting

First color: Do not use a lot of color here, so that the structure of the wood can still be clearly seen in some places. The already prepared wooden strips, which will later be screwed into the spaces between the pallets, can already be primed.

Second color: after four to five hours the paint is dry enough for the second coat to follow. This time only apply paint in spots, which creates an uneven surface.

Third color: The third color can be used to set additional accents, including on the wooden strips. Ideally, these are already in their future place so that the color accents on the palette also extend over these intermediate pieces. Then let the wood dry overnight.

Screw the strips together

So that nothing can fall through the cracks, the matching wooden strips are screwed between the pallet boards.

Tip: It looks classy when you put a glass plate on it later. The price for this is expensive, but it also makes the table easier to maintain.

Connect pallets

Now the two Euro pallets are screwed to the “blocks” from the inside using several flat connectors.

Fasten rollers

Finally, screw the four rollers to the corners of the underside of the table. The rollers should match the weight of the two pallets and if possible two of them should have brakes – otherwise the table will roll around constantly. But it is also easy to move and transport.

Homemade Flower Pot with a Tire

Charlotte J. Devine · ·

If you have a terrace or garden at home, you will surely appreciate going out and looking at the plants and flowers that have blossomed. Here we leave you a great idea to recycle a tire, turning it into a home pot in the shape of a super pretty flower. There are no excuses to have the best garden in the world! 🙂

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

 Tools

  •  Brush
  •  Knife
  •  Flexometer
  •  Sandpaper
  •  Pallet
  •  Marker pen
  •  keyhole saw

 materials

  •  Flowers
  •  Recycled tire
  •  Paint
  • MDF board

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cut the tire

Ready to create your home flower pot ? The first step you will have to do is to trace, with a marker in a visible color, the triangles around the tire, which will simulate the petals of the flower.

When you have finished drawing the silhouette, protect your hands with safety gloves and cut the tire with a cutter, following the design little by little. We recommend that you use a motorcycle tire, since the motorcycle only has a metal cord on the inside edges. You have 2 options: first remove that cord by cutting with a utility knife or, when tracing the silhouette of the flower, leave a few centimeters around the edge to avoid problems when cutting it.

2. Flip the tire

Once you have cut out the silhouette that will form the flower, remove the excess material and place the tire on the ground to be able to turn it over more easily. Help yourself with your feet and hands, always protected.

3. Create the base

In order to put the plants you want in your home flower-shaped pot , you will need to close one side of the tire. To do this, you can use a DM board. Measure the diameter of the tire with a tape measure and cut the piece, which you can put directly inside the pot. When you turn the tire over, the rubber itself will act as a stop and you will not have to insert screws to make the joint.

Once you have finished cutting the board, sand the edges well so that the finish is as perfect as possible, removing any burrs that have remained.

4. Paint the tire

Decorate! Clean the tire very well with a brush and then apply paint in the color you like best all over the surface. We have chosen white, so the flowers will stand out even more. Make sure you don’t leave any spaces unpainted.

Ready! Now you can plant your favorite flowers in this great homemade flower pot!
